This pattern is worked in continuous rounds. Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of each round.

Star Body (Make 2 identical pieces)

Start with your main body color (e.g., Red or Green).

  • Round 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
  • Round 2: inc in each st around (12)
  • Round 3: (1 sc, inc) * 6 (18)
  • Round 4: (2 sc, inc) * 6 (24)
  • Round 5: (3 sc, inc) * 6 (30)
  • Round 6: (4 sc, inc) * 6 (36)
  • Round 7: (5 sc, inc) * 6 (42)
  • Round 8: (6 sc, inc) * 6 (48)

Now, we will create the five points of the star directly from this circle.

  • Star Points:
  • Round 1: - 10 sc
  • Round 2: - Skip first stitch 9 sc
  • Round 3 - Skip first stitch 8 sc
  • Continue by skipping first stitch until 1 stitch left.

Fasten off the first star piece. For the second star piece, do not fasten off. Place both pieces together with the wrong sides facing each other and single crochet them together around the edges. Before you fully close it, add a good amount of fiberfill stuffing. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Head

Use the skin-tone yarn.

  • Round 1: 6 sc in MR (6)
  • Round 2: inc in each st around (12)
  • Round 3: (1 sc, inc) * 6 (18)
  • Round 4: (2 sc, inc) * 6 (24)
  • Round 5: (3 sc, inc) * 6 (30)
  • Rounds 6-9 (4 rounds): 1 sc in each st around (30)
  • Round 11: (3 sc, dec) * 6 (24)
  • Round 12: (2 sc, dec) * 6 (18)

Insert safety eyes between Rounds 8 and 9, about 5-6 stitches apart. Begin to stuff the head firmly.

  • Round 13: (1 sc, dec) * 6 (12)
  • Round 14: dec * 6 (6)

Finish stuffing. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Use the yarn needle to weave the tail through the front loops of the final 6 stitches and pull tight to close the hole. Weave in the end.

Hat

Start with your main hat color (e.g., Red or Green).

  • Round 1: 5 sc in MR (5): 1 sc in each st around (4)
  • Round 2: 5 sc, inc (7)
  • Round 3: (6 sc, inc)  (8)
  • Keep making one inc in each row until you have 28 stitches

For the decorative brim (optional), switch to your accent colors and work a few more rounds. You can create stripes or a simple border.

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing if needed.

Assembly and Final Touches

  1. Hair: Before attaching the hat, create the hair. Wrap brown yarn around two fingers multiple times, tie it in the middle, and cut the loops. Sew or glue this small bunch of hair to the top of the head.
  2. Attach Head & Hat: Sew or glue the hat securely onto the head, covering the hair anchor point. Then, sew or glue the completed head onto the center of the star body.
  3. Decorations: This is the fun part!
    • Glue small white pom-poms or buttons down the center of the star body.
    • Add a small wooden bead to the end of each of the 5 points of the star to create hands and feet.
    • Tie a festive ribbon into a small bow and glue it at the elf's neck.
    • Add a tiny pom-pom to the tip of the hat.
