Crochet Puffy Flower – Free Pattern
This beautiful, squishy flower is a joy to crochet. The pattern uses a simple Tunisian crochet technique for the petals that gives a lovely knitted look. It works up quickly, requires very little yarn, and is perfect for decorating bags, hats, scarves, or for making a garland. You can even add a hanging loop!
I’ve designed this flower to be as relaxing as possible – no complicated stitches, just a rhythmic flow that will calm your mind. Follow along with the step-by-step video tutorial below.

Materials
- Yarn: DK or worsted weight yarn in two colors.
Color A: for the center (small amount).
Color B: for the petals (small amount).
I recommend cotton or a cotton blend for stitch definition, but acrylic works beautifully too. - Crochet hook: Size appropriate for your yarn (I use 3.5 mm / E hook for DK, or 4 mm / G for worsted).
- Stuffing: A small amount of fiberfill (polyester stuffing).
- Notions: Yarn needle, stitch marker (optional).
Skill Level
Advanced beginner. You need to know basic crochet stitches (chain, single crochet, slip stitch). The petals use a basic Tunisian crochet technique, fully explained below.
Abbreviations (US Terminology)
- ch: chain
- sc: single crochet
- inc: increase (2 sc in the same stitch)
- sl st: slip stitch
- st(s): stitch(es)
- yo: yarn over
- Tunisian simple stitch (Tss): Explained in pattern
Finished Size
Approximately 10 cm / 4 inches across with DK yarn. Size will vary with yarn weight and hook.
Pattern Notes
- The center is worked in continuous spirals – do not join at the end of each round unless specified. Use a stitch marker to mark the first stitch of the round if needed.
- The petals are worked flat using a forward and return pass (basic Tunisian crochet). You will pick up loops on the forward pass and work them off on the return pass.
- Each flower is made up of two identical pieces which are then crocheted together and lightly stuffed.
- Read all instructions before starting.
Instructions
Part 1: Flower Center (Make 2)
With Color A, make a magic ring.
- Round 1: 6 sc into the magic ring. Pull the tail tight to close. (6 sts)
- Round 2: Inc in each st around. (12 sts)
- Round 3: (1 sc in next st, inc) repeat 6 times. (18 sts)
Fasten off Color A, leaving a 10 cm (4”) tail. Weave in the tail on the back, or simply knot it and leave it inside – it will be hidden. Set aside.
Part 2: Petals – Tunisian Crochet (Make 2)
Now we’ll add the petals. Each flower piece has 6 petals. Each petal uses 3 stitches of the center round (18 ÷ 3 = 6 petals). We will work one petal at a time, moving around the circle.
Join Color B with a sl st in any st of Round 3 of the center. This will be the starting point.
Petal 1 – Step by Step
Foundation forward pass:
- Ch 8 (or any number depending on how long you want your petals; chain more for longer petals, fewer for shorter ones. I chained 8).
- Insert hook into the 2nd ch from hook, yo and pull up a loop. Keep the loop on the hook. (2 loops on hook)
- Continue in each chain across: insert hook in next ch, yo, pull up a loop. At the end of the chain you will have 8 loops on hook.
- Insert hook into the same stitch where you made the sl st join (the 1st of the 3 stitches of the petal), yo and pull up a loop. (9 loops on hook)
Foundation return pass:
* Yo, pull through 2 loops on hook. Repeat from * until 1 loop remains. (You have just worked off all 9 loops row by row.)
Row 2 (work into same stitch):
- Forward pass: Now look at the front of your work. You’ll see horizontal bars. Skip the first horizontal bar (closest to the hook). Insert hook under the next horizontal bar, yo, pull up a loop. Repeat in each horizontal bar across. When you reach the end, insert hook into the same base stitch again (the 1st of the 3 stitches), yo, pull up a loop. (9 loops on hook)
- Return pass: Yo, pull through 2 loops. Repeat across until 1 loop remains.
Row 3 (move to next stitch):
- Forward pass: Skip first horizontal bar. Work a loop in each horizontal bar across. At the end, insert hook into the next stitch of the center round (the 2nd of the 3 stitches), yo, pull up a loop. (9 loops)
- Return pass: Yo, pull through 2 loops. Repeat across.
Row 4 (work into same stitch):
- Forward pass: Skip first horizontal bar, pick up loops in each horizontal bar across. Insert hook into the same stitch as Row 3 (the 2nd stitch), yo, pull up a loop. (9 loops)
- Return pass: Yo, pull through 2 loops. Repeat across.
Row 5 (move to last stitch & bind off):
- Forward pass: Skip first horizontal bar, pick up loops in each horizontal bar across. Insert hook into the next stitch (the 3rd of the 3 stitches), yo, pull up a loop. (9 loops)
- Bind off (like knitting): Instead of working a return pass, we will close the petal. *Insert hook under the next horizontal bar (or through the “V” at the top of the row), yo and pull through both loops on hook (sl st).* Repeat from * for each horizontal bar until you reach the base.
- Finally, sl st into the same base stitch (the 3rd stitch) to anchor the petal.
Petal complete!
To begin the next petal, sl st into the next stitch of the center round (this will be the 1st stitch of the new petal’s three-stitch group). Then ch 8 and repeat the process from “Foundation forward pass” to the bind off.
Continue until you have 6 petals. After the last petal, finish with a sl st in the next stitch, then fasten off, leaving a long tail (about 15 cm / 6”) for joining later. Weave in any remaining tails from Color B inside the center, or just knot them securely and leave them inside the center to act as stuffing.
Make two identical flower pieces.
Part 3: Assembly
- Place the two flower pieces together, right sides facing out (the sides with the pretty petal texture on the outside). Line up the petals.
- Thread the long tail from one flower piece onto a yarn needle. If both pieces have tails, you can use either one.
- Join the petals by working slip stitches through both layers. Insert hook under both loops (or front loop only – both ways work) of corresponding petals, yo, pull through all loops. Repeat along the edge of the first petal.
- Before closing the top of the petal completely, add a tiny pinch of fiberfill inside the petal to give it a nice puffy shape. Don’t overstuff. Use the blunt end of your hook to push it gently into the corners.
- Continue with sl st until you reach the valley between petals. Move to the next petal and repeat.
- Work your way around all six petals, stuffing each one before you finish its seam.
- When you have gone all around, fasten off and weave in the end. The center can be left without stuffing (the yarn tails inside will add enough bulk) or you can add a tiny bit more fiberfill before closing the last petal fully.
Optional Hanging Loop
To attach a loop for hanging your flower on a bag or to make an ornament:
- Before finishing the last petal, chain about 10–15 (or desired length) with the working yarn. Sl st into the base of the chain to form a loop, then continue joining the petals. Secure tightly.
Finishing Touches
- Check all knots and weave in any remaining ends. Because the flower is stuffed, you can simply leave small knotted tails inside the petals – they won’t show.
- Block the petals gently with steam if your yarn allows, to even out the Tunisian fabric and enhance the petal shape.
Enjoy your beautiful, plush crochet flower. Use them as bag charms, keychains, home décor, or join them together to make a stunning blanket or cushion cover. I’d love to see your creations – tag me on social media with #kimcraftflow and share your flowers!
