Hello everyone! Welcome back to the blog. Today, I am thrilled to share the written pattern for an incredibly beautiful project: the Spiral Sun Granny Square. Finished Spiral Sun Granny Square

In this tutorial, you will learn exactly how to handle seamless color changes, how to weave in your ends neatly as you go, and how to keep your stitches looking perfectly defined. It is a quick and rewarding project that you can easily scale up for larger designs!

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Milky Cotton yarn (highly recommended for its soft texture and clean stitch definition).
  • Colors: Two contrasting colors of your choice to create the spiral effect (e.g., White and Green).
  • Hook Size: 2.5 mm (Size 3) crochet hook.

Pattern Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • MR: Magic Ring
  • Ch: Chain
  • SC: Single Crochet
  • HDC: Half Double Crochet
  • DC: Double Crochet
  • Tr: Treble Crochet
  • Sl St: Slip Stitch
  • Inc: Increase (2 stitches worked into the same stitch)

Round 1: Creating the Spiral Center (Color A & Color B)

Crochet Spiral Center Magic Ring
  1. With Color A (White), start with a Magic Ring, chain 1, and work: 1 SC, 1 HDC, and 2 DC into the ring. Pull the loop up so it doesn't unravel.
  2. Attach Color B (Green) into the same magic ring. Chain 1, and mirror the exact same stitches: 1 SC, 1 HDC, and 2 DC. You now have 8 stitches in total.
  3. Pull the tail of the magic ring firmly to close the center hole completely.

Round 2: The First Extension Round

  1. Pick up Color A and work under both loops of the next stitches to make 3 DC increases (2 DC into each of the next 3 stitches). Pull up the loop.
  2. Switch back to Color B and repeat the exact same sequence on the other side: work 3 DC increases into the next 3 stitches. You will have a total of 14 stitches at the end of this round.

Round 3: Expanding the Spiral

Expanding Spiral Stitches
  1. Using Color A, work 6 DC increases (2 DC in each of the next 6 stitches). Using Color B, work 6 DC increases (2 DC in each of the next 6 stitches). You will have a total of 26 stitches at the end of this round.

Round 4: Expanding the Spiral

Crochet Sun Rays Round
  1. With color B 2 DC in next 5 ST, 1 DC in next 2, HDC in next 2, SC in next 2, SL ST, fasten off.
  2. With color A 2 DC in next 5 ST, 1 DC in next 2, HDC in next 2, SC in next 2, SL ST, fasten off.
  3. For the remaining rays, work a 3 unfinished DC cluster across the next stitches, pulling through all 4 loops on your hook, followed by a chain 4. Repeat this around until you have exactly 12 sun rays. Slip stitch to the first ray to close.

Round 5: Crafting the Sun Rays

Crochet Sun Rays Round
  1. Join your yarn into a stitch, chain 2, and work an unfinished DC into the next stitch, followed by another unfinished DC into the following stitch. Pull through all 3 loops on your hook to complete the first ray.
  2. Chain 4.
  3. For the remaining rays, work a 3 unfinished DC cluster across the next stitches, pulling through all 4 loops on your hook, followed by a chain 4. Repeat this around until you have exactly 12 sun rays. Slip stitch to the first ray to close.

Round 6: Turning the Sun into a Square

Squaring the crochet circle
  1. Join your background yarn with a standing double crochet in any chain-4 space. Carry both colors along if you wish to alternate rows smoothly, keeping the non-working yarn on top of your stitches.
  2. In the chain space, work 4 DC. When joining a new side, stitch 1 DC on top of the ray, followed by 4 DC in the next space.
  3. To build the shape, work: 2 SC, 1 HDC, 2 DC, and 1 Treble Crochet into the subsequent stitches to step up the height.
  4. Create the Corner: In the designated corner stitch, work 2 Treble Crochets, chain 2, and 2 Treble Crochets all into the exact same stitch.
  5. Mirror the stitches down the side: 1 Tr, 2 DC, 1 HDC, followed by 6 SC across the flat middle section, then build up to the next corner. Repeat around to finish the square layout.

Round 7: The Final Single Crochet Border

  1. Chain 1 and work 1 Single Crochet (SC) into every single stitch all the way around the square. This creates a beautifully clean border.
  2. When you reach each corner chain-2 space, work: 2 SC, chain 2, 2 SC into the space.
  3. Slip stitch to the very first SC of the round, fasten off, and neatly weave in any remaining ends. Your gorgeous Spiral Sun Granny Square is complete!
