How to Crochet a Stunning Sunflower Granny Square | Easy Beginner Tutorial
Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog. Today, I am excited to share the written pattern for this beautiful and cute crochet sunflower granny square. These squares are incredibly versatile and can be used for a variety of projects, such as stylish crochet bags, cozy blankets, or even trendy cardigans.
The best part? They are super easy to make. With just a few rows, you can achieve an amazing look that mimics a bright sunflower. Whether you are a total beginner or an experienced crafter, you will love how quickly these come together.
Materials Needed
- Yarn: I recommend Milky Cotton (60% cotton, 40% acrylic) for a soft yet sturdy finish. You can also use standard cotton yarn for blankets or wool for cardigans.
- Colors: Brown (center), Yellow (petals), and Green (border).
- Hook Size: 3.0 mm crochet hook.
Round 1: The Flower Center (Brown)
- Start with a Magic Ring. Wrap the yarn around your finger to make a loop, insert the hook, and grab the working yarn.
- Chain 3 (this counts as your first double crochet).
- Work 11 more Double Crochets (DC) into the magic ring.
- You should have a total of 12 stitches (including the initial chain 3).
- Pull the tail to close the ring tightly and slip stitch into the top of the starting chain 3 to finish the round.
Round 2: The Yellow Petals (Yellow)
- Switch to yellow yarn by pulling it through the loops during the final slip stitch.
- Chain 4 (this serves as your first treble crochet).
- In the same stitch, work a Treble Cluster: yarn over twice, insert hook, pull through two, pull through two, leaving the last loop on the hook. Repeat and then pull through all loops.
- Chain 2.
- In the next stitch, work a cluster of 3 trebles. Repeat the sequence (3-Treble Cluster, Chain 2) in every stitch around until you have 12 petals.
- Slip stitch to the first cluster to close the round.
Round 3: Squaring the Flower (Green)
- Change to green yarn and move immediately into the chain-2 space between the petals.
- Work 3 SC in the first space and 3 SC in the second space.
- In the next space, create the Corner: 1 HDC, 1 DC, 1 Tr, Chain 2, 1 Tr, 1 DC, 1 HDC.
- Repeat the sequence (3 SC in the next two spaces, then a Corner in the third space) all the way around.
- Slip stitch to the first SC to finish the round.
Round 4: Final Border (Green)
- Chain 1 and work 1 Double Crochet (DC) into every stitch around the square.
- In each corner chain-2 space, work: 2 DC, Chain 2, 2 DC to maintain the square shape.
- Slip stitch to the first DC, cut the yarn, and weave in all ends neatly.
Granny squares are like "Legos for crafters"—they are the building blocks for so many amazing designs! I would love to see your finished work, so please let me know in the comments what you are planning to create with these sunflowers.
